We knew we couldn't open a proper Irish Pub without the most important bar
staple - pints o' beer. Sure, a nice cold bottle of Corona or Coors Light is
refreshing on a hot summer day, but what a true pub-goer craves --
especially in the air-conditioned comfort of Danny Buoy's -- is that
tantalizing foam of a freshly poured Guinness or a frosty Boddingtons to go
with your fish and chips. So we went where no Provo bar dared go before and
proudly claim to be first ever to bring in kegs of your favorite imported
beers. We even installed a state-of-the-art draught system to ensure each
pint is as fresh and cold as possible.
So why is it so freakin' expensive?? Well, first of all, it's not THAT
expensive. Go to any major city in the world - or worse yet, any major
airport - and you can be sure you'll be shelling out at least $7.50 for your
pour of Guinness. Second, living in a tax free paradise is a bit more taxing
that you might think, especially when it comes to bringing in evil elixirs
such as beer. You see, the import duty on alcohol, unlike most other
products, is based on volume, not price. So even if we were getting our kegs
for free from our mainland sources (ya, right), we'd still have to pay a
fixed import duty, which in the case of kegs of beer is well over 100% of
the actual cost. Add in the hefty expenses of shipping, handling,
refrigeration and the massive salaries we pay our friendly staff, and turns
out you're getting quite a bargain actually. Truth be told, imported draught
beer is Danny Buoy's least profitable item...We only sell it so cheap
because we love you. And, thanks to our friends at Turks Head Brewing, you
can get a cheaper pour without any compromises in quality with their Turks
Head Amber and Lager.
And while we're on the topic, quit your bitchin' about the "small" pints we
serve. We use American-style pint glasses because you pay in American-style
dollars. If you want to give us 7 pounds fifty, we'll gladly give you a big
one. |
